Ssassa Flamenco Ektaal

Three renowned artists, together with the dancer Katja Campanile, take the audience on an exhilarating musical journey. The ‘Flamenco Ektaal’ programme is a sub-group of SSASSA. The trio is joined by Arman Hussain, Amrat’s son, whose playing on the sitar and harmonium plays a key role in shaping the music. Ektaal transports listeners into the fascinating world of flamenco. ‘Ektaal’ is an Indian 12/16 rhythm that the Roma brought to Spain many centuries ago – the basis for the buleria and other flamenco rhythms in 12/16 time.
The journey begins in Andalusia, the heart of flamenco, and leads via Skopje and Istanbul – where flamenco rhythms and sounds have long enriched Balkan music – all the way to Jaipur in Rajasthan, the cradle of the Roma. In this varied programme, the audience experiences first-hand just how much flamenco has shaped the international music scene in recent decades, from Latin sounds to jazz.
